Clearing Out the Spring Notebook
Story and Photos by Gregg McMullin
With the spring break behind us, it’s time
to clear out the notebook of what has been
happening to teams in El Segundo and what’s
coming up as their seasons head into league
play. We’ll also look at some former El
Segundo High School athletes who are still
in the news and how you can give back to
the schools in a healthy way.
Baseball Team Splits
in Tournament
The Eagles won two and lost two in the
Santa Ana Elks Tournament and head into this
week’s Ocean League schedule 9-7 overall.
They fell to Arlington (Riverside) 6-1 and
Village Christian (Sun Valley) 6-1 while defeating
Newport Harbor 7-5 and Capistrano
Valley Christian 11-5. Arlington ended up
winning its bracket of the tournament.
Jaime Galicia improved to 3-3 overall with
Jaime Galicia leads the Eagles with an 1.02 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 41 innings.
his complete game win over Newport Harbor.
Of the five runs he gave up, only two were
earned and his ERA increased to a paltry
1.01. He also helped himself at the plate
with a three-run homer. Cooper Sutherland
picked up his second win of the season by
tossing four strong innings against Capo Valley
Christian. Sutherland gave up one run on
two hits and struck out three. Ethan Burner
was 3-for-3, Julian Rodriquez was 2-for-4
with two RBIs and a run scored, and Ryan
Carey blasted a run-scoring triple.
The Eagles, the Ocean League defending
champions, began their Ocean League
schedule Tuesday against to contender Culver
City. They continue their quest for another
league title today at Culver City. The Eagles
wi8ll host third-ranked South Torrance on
Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in the second
round of the Redondo Tournament.
Former Eagles Still Playing
A couple of weeks back, I mentioned a
number of former Eagles still playing baseball
at the collegiate level. Missing on that list
were three pitchers and a utility player on the
2016 team. The Boyce brothers Wyatt and
Garrett are now at West LA College. Wyatt,
who averaged a strikeout per inning for the
Eagles, has the most wins for the Wildcats
this season. Garrett, who led the Eagles with
a 1.19 ERA in 13 games along with three
saves, is showing promise coming out of the
bullpen. Mario Morales was a valuable utility
player for the Eagles and continues that
role as an infielder and one of the team’s top
catchers. Josh Bornstein (2012), who led the
Eagles with 71 strikeouts in 60 innings, is
one of the West LA College coaches.
Sean Emery is an outfielder for the Claremont
Mudd-Scripps Stags. Emery, who was a
two-year standout for the Eagles and hit .398
as a senior, has been selected to play in the
Palm Springs Summer Collegiate League and
will be playing for the California Grizzlies.
At El Camino College, Grant Palmer is
back for another year working with the infielders
and hitters. Palmer was a four-year
letterman for the Eagles before going to
El Camino and then onto UC Irvine where
he is 11th in games played all time. Kobe
Estrada, another two-year standout for the
Eagles, has decided to redshirt this season.
Softball Team Looks to Rebound
The girls softball team has started
slowly because of injuries and a rugged
schedule. Though the Eagles are off to a
slow start, a number of players expected to
have good years are having great seasons.
Kaili Reitano is one of the top hitters in
the South Bay with a .467 batting average,
while Monique Benjamin is blistering the ball
at a .391 clip. Freshman sensation Katie
Sean Emery hit .398 for the Eagles a season ago and is currently one of the top outfielders for the Claremont Mudd Scripps Stags.
Croxall looks to be the real deal and is hitting
.444, while Kat Kakuske leads the team
in extra base hits.
Facing teams favored to win their respective
league titles such as South Torrance, Venice,
La Canada and Long Beach Wilson should
help prepare El Segundo for this week’s
Ocean League opener against Culver City
on Tuesday and on the road against Beverly
Hills on Thursday. Next week, the Eagles
host Hawthorne on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
El Segundo once again hosts its own tournament
that takes place over two weekends
starting Saturday, April 21 and wrapping
up the following Saturday. The Eagles face
Narbonne in the first game of the day at 8:30
a.m. and King Drew at 1 p.m.
Volleyball Team Improving
With so much success for a program that has
won two CIF titles (2010 and 2015) and six
league titles, El Segundo volleyball’s ascent
to Division 1 from Division IV in eight years
was inevitable. Now that the team is playing
against the bigger schools and the elite
private campuses, the challenge to compete
is weighing on the Eagles. Their two losses
were to an undefeated South Torrance team
ranked third nationally and to a Lakewood
squad ranked second in Division 2.
The team is filled with young talent
that will be tested in the first week of
Ocean League play when the Eagles faced
Hawthorne on Tuesday and are at home today
at 3:15 p.m. against Ocean League favorite
Santa Monica. Samo and Culver City look
to be the biggest obstacles standing in the
way of El Segundo’s seventh league title.
Next Tuesday, the Eagles travel to Culver
City and host Beverly Hills next Thursday
at 3:15 p.m.
Run For Education Nearing
The 27th annual El Segundo PTA/Council
Run for Education is set for Saturday, April
21 at 8 a.m. This is a great time to be with
family and friends and at the same time
help support El Segundo schools that benefit
from this event.
The El Segundo Run for Education has
been selected as a 2018 Road Running
Grand Prix event. The series offers those
USA Track and Field members to compete
in some of the region’s best road races. If
you are a member of the USATF, you can
get a discount on your registration for the
El Segundo Run for Education.
As one of the more unique USA Track
and Field-certified road courses in Southern
California, the El Segundo Run for Education
features a run of downtown El Segundo as
well as our neighborhoods. The 5K Run/Walk
is an easy-to-moderate course that features a
few small hills through local neighborhoods
as residents cheer on the runners. The 10K
run offers a second loop of the same course.
There is, as always, two Kids Fun runs -- one
for kids under 10, which is a 1K, and then
a .5K for kids under 6 years of age. All 5K
and 10K participants will receive special
commemorative finisher medals as will kids
in the fun runs.
There is still plenty of time to register
online for the race at www.esrun 4education.
