School Board from front page
now 90 years old, needs repair of deteriorating
roofs, plumbing units, and electrical systems.
Upgrades of science labs, libraries, career
training facilities and instructional technology
to support student achievement in core
subjects such as math, science, engineering,
technology and the arts are also on the to-do
list. The construction and placement of flexible,
multi-use classrooms to support hands-on
science instruction and learning-by-doing was
noted in the presentation, as well as improving
ventilation, insulation, doors and site windows
to increase energy efficiency and save money.
It’s all needed to improve student safety and
campus security, Moore said, and to allow
students the best opportunity to reach their
maximum learning potentials.
Moore’s summation noted the “direct relationship
between quality school facilities
and student achievement.” Studies show, she
concluded, “that children and teachers perform
best in safe, modern classrooms and schools
with up-to-date technology.”
Prior to Moore’s presentation, El Segundo
High senior Jake Nichols, who was selected to
be the student representative to the Board for
2017/18, was administered the oath of office
and made his first presentation to the group.
Nichols, the ASB 2017/18 President at the
High School and nattily attired in suspenders
and bowtie, quickly detailed the final week of
activities on the campus prior to this Tuesday’s
opening school bell.
Board President Bill Watkins welcomed
Nichols to the School Board team. “We are
honored to have Jake, ESHS ASB President,
join us as the student representative to the
Board. We look forward to his thoughts as he
represents the students in our district.”
Ed! Foundation CEO Carol Pirsztuk also
made her monthly presentation, highlighting the
2017/2018 Ed! mission to raise $1.5 million for
programming at Center and Richmond Street
schools. She said Ed! Is asking for donations
of $600 per student this time around.
Nineteen consent agenda items were quickly
dealt with, including the ratification of a contract
agreement with a law firm to provide
the District with a variety of legal services;
approval to renew the Project Lead the Way
(PLTW) contract for biomedical, engineering,
and gateway to engineering pathways; approval
of the always popular Outdoor Science School
contract for El Segundo Middle School students
in the spring of 2018; a memorandum
of understanding with South Bay Children’s
Health Center and the District; an agreement
to provide a music program to the young
learners attending Eagles’ Nest Preschool;
a retro agreement to allow high schoolers
to attend a Cheer Camp that took place last
