Letter to El Segundo
Residents from Topgolf
Residents of El Segundo,
As many of you know, Topgolf’s interest
in rebuilding The Lakes at El Segundo spans
more than five years. Throughout the years,
our commitment to this location – and to the
community – has never wavered. In fact, it
has grown. On Sept. 5, the El Segundo City
Council will make its final vote on this project.
Before that vote takes place, we want to share
our plans for serving El Segundo and reaffirm
our pledge to continue inspiring interest and
participation in golf.

growing the game. The passion the community

has for this facility is truly unlike anything
our company has seen before. Because of
this, we understand it is both our privilege and
responsibility to honor this legacy for decades
to come. We have made several amendments
to our proposed lease agreement as a result,
and these terms are unique to this location
because of its special history.

Topgolf’s Commitment
to Growing the Game
What is good for golf is good for Topgolf
– and vice versa. Topgolf is introducing golf
to more people every day than any other
concept in history. And many of our Guests
are transitioning to traditional golf. A 2015
survey of Topgolf Guests by the National Golf
Foundation revealed that 24 percent of those
who had been playing golf less than three years
began playing after their first Topgolf experience.
Eighty-two percent of those Guests said
Topgolf influenced their decision to play golf.
We will continue to grow the game through
our strategic alliances, fun and interactive programming,
and community outreach.
• At Topgolf, Guests of all ages and skill levels
can play and have fun.
• Club rentals are complimentary on every
visit. (We also recycle our golf equipment to
military troops serving overseas through our
Bunkers in Baghdad partnership.)
• Topgolf offers year-round programming to
generate interest and participation in the sport.
• Topgolf Leagues are a fun and social
experience, similar to kickball or softball
leagues. More importantly, Topgolf Leagues
are helping grow the game by making golf
a regular weekly activity for our Guests.
• Topgolf Summer Academy offers kids
and teens a fun, relaxed introduction to
the game of golf. We hope that some day
in the future, a budding young pro player
tells us that he or she developed a love
for the sport at Topgolf.
• Topgolf Tour allows beginners to onboard
into the competitive world of golf. It is
the first-ever tour to put male and female
competitors on a completely equal, simultaneous
playing field for the same prize
money.
• Topgolf provides complimentary golf lessons
annually on National Golf Day.
• Topgolf is partnered with the PGA TOUR,
LPGA, PGA of America, Golf Channel, the
National Golf Foundation and the World

economic impact on the local community.

million over a 10-year period.

and partner with us to enhance it.
Respectfully,

Eagles Look to Reload Their
Defense for 2017 Season
By Gregg McMullin
The El Segundo High School football team
had a memorable season in 2016. With an offense
that averaged 32 points and a defense
that allowed just 142 points all season long, it
was a team filled with seniors. With so many
starters having graduated on defense, the Eagles
look to reload a roster that gave up the least
amount of points in their division for three
consecutive season.
Dan Heck, the architect of one of the South
Bay’s top defenses, says losing so many on
defense to graduation could be a challenge.
He adds that many of this year’s players on
defense had smaller roles last season, so there
is some experience albeit on a limited basis.
Coach Heck says in the past his linebackers
were the strength of the defense, especially
with their skill level from playing together for
three years. This season the defense is led by
the secondary, which is quick and has been
together for three seasons.
Taj Balogun leads the defensive secondary.
With his speed and 6’5” frame, opposing offenses
will be challenged to throw in his area.
Danny McEntee is another concern for the opposition.
His knack for being around the ball
is one reason he led the secondary last season
in tackles. Hunter Lynch is another speedy back
with experience. In 12 games last season, he
was second to McEntee in tackles for defensive
players in the secondary. Tyler Villalobos, a
senior with three seasons of varsity experience,
will also be counted on in a major way.
How do you reload the linebackers who have
been the heart and soul of Heck’s defense?
Gone are Mark Binder, Angelo Pacheco and
Billy Brasher who accounted for nearly 40
percent of the team’s tackles. Heck will look
to seniors Kyle Freeman, Tim Schartz, George
Montani and Dariush Sayson as well as junior
James Amerault.
Freeman will be counted on to play a major
role freelancing between the linebacker spot
and secondary. He led the team in interceptions
last season. Schartz and Montani were both
backups last season, but played in each game.
Sayson, a transfer in, could play a vital role
once cleared to participate in games. Amerault
is a fast athlete who will fill plenty of voids
due to graduation.
The biggest defensive concern, according to
Heck, will be the defensive line. Last season’s
line was arguably was of the program’s best in
several seasons. Dylan Radke, Duncan Papalii,
Adrian Johnson and Gabriel Fernan will be
tough to replace. Heck is exploring his options

El Segundo High School’s
International Lacrosse Superstar
By Gregg McMullin
El Segundo has an international budding
lacrosse superstar. Lukas Roscoe, a sophomore
at El Segundo High School, has been playing
lacrosse basically all of his life. He was one
of the top players for the Eagles his freshman
season and could be one of the best in the
South Bay next season.
With his Danish background, he had the
opportunity to travel to Kiel, Germany to join
the Danish National Lacrosse team. He joined
the team for a tune-up tournament before the
World Championships to be held in Israel in
2018. The team went 6-0 with Lukas scoring
the second highest number of goals and the
most assists. The fledgling program did not
compete in the 2014 World Championships,
but the addition of Lukas and four other
America-based players of Danish heritage
should boost the program going forward.
Roscoe performed at a high level and
helped his older teammates play better. He
was, however, anxious about how he would
do communicating with his teammates. “I
think Lukas was nervous because his Danish
is somewhere between rusty and nonexistent,”
said his father, El Segundo High lacrosse
coach Brooks Roscoe. “But we got there and
discovered everybody spoke mostly English
on the sidelines and on the field.”
The team will reconvene for another tournament
in Berlin, Germany next June before
traveling to Israel for the World Championships
in July. •
