Eagles from page 5
for El Segundo. When the Eagles would take
a five-point lead, the Wolves would come up
with a long range three-pointer to keep it close.
After Jones gave the Eagles a 15-10 lead with an
ESPN highlight impossible layup, the Wolves’
Cabrera hit one from beyond the arc to make it
15-13. Da Vinci would claim the second quarter
lead with better shooting and the teams went
into halftime with the Wolves leading 19-15.
The Eagles’ shooting woes continued in
the third quarter and their deficit grew to nine
points. The game was clearly in control by Da
Vinci entering the fourth quarter and Nathanial
Perry’s layup extended the lead to 30-19. That
uncontested layup woke the Eagles up and certainly
got the crowd going too. Dylan Aubert’s
three-point play helped ignite the comeback as
El Segundo now trailed by four points.
The El Segundo bench is deep and March
has 10 players he can insert into the game at
any time. Sure-shooting sophomore Leo Cagan
came off the bench during crunch time and
sank a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 37-35
lead and their first cushion since the second
quarter. Da Vinci tied it with 1:40 remaining
in the game. Harrison Hebert’s only points of
the night were the biggest when he drained
a three-pointer with 1:15 left for a 40-37 El
Segundo lead. In the closing moments, Da
Vinci had an opportunity to tie the game when
the Eagles sent them to the free throw line.
Jaylen Bernard sank one of two and Perry
missed both of his attempts with 13 seconds
remaining as the Eagles held on in the final
frantic moments.
The Eagles started Ocean League play last
night at Hawthorne and travel to face Beverly
Hills on Friday night.
Lady Eagles Take Fourth in
Tournament
Riding a four-game winning streak El Segundo
went on the road to play in the Valley
Christian High School Tournament in Cerritos.
After starting with two wins, the Eagles fell
in the semifinals and then in the third place
game to finish fourth.
El Segundo opened pool play in its first game
against West Valley High School (Cottonwood,
CA). Both teams struggled offensively from the
field with the score tied 17-17 at the half. The
Eagles ramped up their defensive intensity in
the second half. Four key steals in the third
period led to back-to-back three-pointers by
senior Malia Hui and junior Reese Jones to
open a 23-17 lead. Sophomore Storey Noble
added two free throws in the third quarter to
take an eight-point lead that the Eagles never
relinquished in winning 35-27. El Segundo
was led by Jones (17 points, 9 rebounds) and
Noble (11 points, 7 rebounds).
In the second game, the Eagles rallied from
a 10-4 deficit after the first quarter to record
its sixth straight win. El Segundo took a 17-14
lead at the end of the first half and erupted
for 16 points in the third quarter to lead by 15
points and cruise to a 42-31 victory. Sophomore
Jordan Peterson helped lead her team with her
passing that resulted in a trio of three-pointers.
She finished with six assists. The Eagles were
led by Storey Noble with 12 points and Reese
Jones, who scored 10 points.
El Segundo advanced to the semifinals, but
fell to North Torrance in a lopsided loss. The
loss might have been expected since the Saxons
Harrison Hebert causes a turnover late in the game the Eagles
won 41-38.
are ranked sixth in the CIF-SS Division 2AA.
Hannah Chang and Reese Jones led the Eagles
in the scoring column.
In the third place game against Foothill. the
Eagles played the Division 1 Knights close for
the first three quarters. El Segundo’s shooting
went cold in the fourth quarter and Foothill
outscored the Eagles 17-5 to win 45-38. Jordan
Peterson led her team with a season and
career high of 16 points. The Eagles opened
Ocean League play on the road at Hawthorne
last night and play Beverly Hills on Friday
night at 6 p.m.
Boys Soccer Team 4-0
The Eagles haven’t lost a step since winning
their CIF title earlier in the year. They’ve started
out 4-0 with wins over some of the South Bay’s
top teams including Torrance, Redondo, West
Torrance and North Torrance.
Casey Lund and Malcolm Holtzmann-Cisse
each scored first half goals against Torrance in
the 2-1 win over the Tartars. The Eagles shut
out Bay League power Redondo 4-0. Devontae
Bowers led the Eagles with two goals, while
Caden Schepp and Holtzmann-Cisse each scored
one goal. Jack Finders’ second half goal off
an assist from Nate Salazar was the only point
scored in the Eagles’ 1-0 win over Pioneer
League power West Torrance. Holtzmann-Cisse
continued his scoring ways with two goals,
including the game-winner in El Segundo’s
3-2 win over North Torrance. Ciaran Feeney
added a second half goal that tied the game.
The Eagles started Ocean League play
yesterday and are at Beverly Hills on Friday.
Next week, they travel to meet Mira Costa on
Tuesday to take on the eighth-ranked CIF-SS
Division 1 Mustangs at 3 p.m. •
