Attention All ES Residents
A trial balloon has just been put into the air.
According to the December 6 issue of El
Segundo Herald councilmember and realtor Scot
Nicol asked his business friendly colleagues
if they would like to consider high density
housing in the area adjacent to or abutting
Washington Park, west of Pacific Coast Hwy.
The area is currently populated by modest sized
apartment houses and condos. True, some of
this area could stand renovation but do we
really want as Grand Tropez or Waypointe or
possibly Playa Vista in this area. What does
the council consider “high density”?
The rationale is concerning the heavy demand
for housing in town from potential business
tenants. Lack of available housing stock may
deter major businesses from coming here. Do
we need more businesses in town? In any case,
it is a specious argument as there is no way,
or should there be, enough housing to satisfy
the demand from the businesses East of Pacific
Coast Hwy. Next would we be talking about
“affordable housing” as El Segundo property
values and rents would not be reasonable
for many of the employees of these firms. I
would suggest that everyone on the East side
of Center Street would be impacted by this
type of development with heavier traffic and
aesthetic concerns.
Council passed it off to the Planning Commission
for recommendations and feasibility study.
Did you ever know of a project the Planning
Commission did not eventually approve? Note
that it was just a few months since the Council
was talking about residential housing on the
East side of PCH. Now they have made the
leap to the West side. Or is this project just
a “straw man” for East side development?
