The Police Unity Tour is Twenty-Five Years Strong
The Police Unity Tour raises awareness of the Police Officers who have died in the line of duty and raises funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial. Due to the pandemic, the Southern California chapter decided that instead of the three-day ride on the east
coast to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C., they would complete a one-day ride in California from Ventura to Santa Barbara and back which totaled over 65 miles. Hawthorne Police Officers Manley and Skovold participated in the Police Unity Tour

Pursuit of Happiness
“We hold these truths to be selfevident,
that all men are created
equal, that they are endowed by
their Creator with certain unalienable
Rights, that among these are
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Happiness.” Thus we read from the Preamble
to the Declaration of Independence. What
exactly does the “pursuit of Happiness”
mean? In a recent article, I read that in an
annual survey entitled, the World Happiness
Report, happiness in the United States has
declined every year for the last nine years.
One commentator wrote, “The U.S. has gotten
a lot richer, but hasn’t gotten happier on
most gauges”. What was surprising was the
fact that happiness did not decline drastically
over the past year during COVID. It seems
that those people who were happy before
2020 are still happy despite their additional
hardships. The data shows a high level of
resilience amongst many Americans. Those
people who indicated a strong religious
faith were a little more likely to be happy.
But, this does not mean you have to be a
devout believer to experience happiness.
It is a misconception to think that because
some one is a Christian, they
are happy. Christians experience
depression, sickness, sadness, and
every ill there is here on earth. It’s
their faith that gets them through
this sin-infested world. The times of
happiness we do have here – being
with people we love, experiences
of beauty and joy, moments of
satisfaction, or feeling close to
God – provide us with a glimpse
of eternal happiness. What really makes us
happy? Aren’t we all always “in pursuit of
happiness”? Don’t we all prefer to be happy
than not? Do we always have to be happy
to be happy? Some of us worry about being
never happy or being too happy. If we are
too happy, people think we are weird. You
must not have too much upstairs, if you
are happy all the time, you’re an “airhead”.
Some of my extended family members/critics
think I’m stupid for being happy, having a
cold one and relaxing. True happiness comes
when we know who we are. We feel secure
in the body that God has put us in. We can
be content knowing that God loves us and
will take care of us. Some of you loyal
readers know that I’m just an old, grumpy,
white geezer who grumbles and complains
when I hit a bad golf shot. Me and my old
lady don’t always get along. I get piffed off
a lot times when people tick me off by being

fear and love God for he is our Creator and
provider of earthly and eternal happiness. Be
happy my dear, loyal, devoted friends and
critics! Why not?

stupid. But through it all, I am happy to live
in this great country, to enjoy my retirement
years, to enjoy watching my grandkids grow
up, and to enjoy that never-ending challenge
of playing that perfect round of golf.
We have so much to be thankful for. How
can we not be happy? Wherever you find
your self on this sliding scale of happiness,
make sure its a cut above the rest
